Pillars of intellectual freedom? Understanding library association activity
02 October 2024
In order to build tools to help library associations and agencies fulfil their potential in supporting and promoting intellectual freedom, IFLA is collecting evidence about activities already underway. Share your responses by 8 November!
The work of libraries is built on the understanding that the possibility to access and use information is a crucial enabler of development and the fulfilment of rights.
The intellectual freedom that this enables cannot, however, be taken for granted. Libraries face threats to this both on the ground, with efforts to censor cooks and other content, as well as at the level of lawmaking with internet shutdowns and more.
Already in IFLA’s Global Vision discussion in the late 2010s, the need for libraries to develop their role as champions of intellectual freedom was highlighted as a priority.
But practically, what can we do to deliver on this? And in particular, what can library associations do, drawing on their traditional role in supporting and animating the library field.
Therefore, in parallel with the work taking place at the global level, IFLA’s Advisory Committee on Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression is launching a survey to understand the work already taking place in associations and relevant agencies.
Through this, we want to bring together a collection of examples of tools, documents, policies and more that can help build capacity and activity around intellectual freedom globally.
If you work with or for a library association or equivalent agency, please do consider responding! Deadline: 8 November 2024.
