Message from Ms Te Paea Paringatai, IFLA President-Elect 2025 -2027
10 June 2025
Kei aku rangatira, tēnā rā koutou katoa

Dear Colleagues, warm Pacific greetings to you all
It is an immense honour to have been elected as President-Elect of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). As a person of Māori (Waikato, Ngāti Porou) lineage, and the first from Aotearoa New Zealand to hold this role, I carry with me deep personal gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility to the aspirations of our Asia and Oceania region, where diversity, resilience, and cultural knowledge are enduring sources of strength.
Libraries in our region operate in some of the most linguistically, culturally, and geographically diverse environments in the world. Our region is home to Indigenous practitioners and many others who serve as custodians of rich knowledge systems, both ancient and emerging. Our work often takes place at the intersection of tradition and innovation, inclusion and disruption, equity and aspiration. I believe that the global library field has much to learn from our region, and that we must continue to amplify our unique voices, perspectives, and leadership on the world stage.
As President-Elect, I am committed to listening, learning, and working with colleagues across our region to benefit the world, and vice versa. Advancing IFLA’s global agenda by championing digital inclusion, supporting Indigenous knowledge systems, preserving our documentary heritage, and strengthening professional capability are just some of the ways we can help shape a future-fit information ecosystem that truly reflects the diverse communities we serve.
I want to acknowledge the extraordinary work being done across Asia and Oceania, from small rural libraries to large national institutions, and the dedication of those who serve their communities with creativity, commitment, and care. I look forward to collaborating with many of you through regional dialogues, learning exchanges, and shared initiatives that support our collective goals.
In the spirit of whanaungatanga, the Māori concept of relationships and connectedness, I see this role not as an individual achievement, but as an opportunity to strengthen our shared work and uplift the voices of those who have long been underrepresented. I welcome your insights, your partnerships, and your vision as we move forward together.
Nā tō rourou, nā tōku rourou, ka ora ai te iwi. With your contribution and my contribution, the people will thrive.
Ngā manaakitanga, best wishes
Ms Te Paea Paringatai
IFLA President-elect 2025-2027
