Library Theory and Research Section
The Library Theory and Research Section (LIBTHEORY) advances library and information studies (LIS) and the profession by promoting high-quality theoretical and applied research that informs professional practice and strengthens the foundations of the field.
The Section is dedicated to building strong connections through research, ensuring that applied research contributes to theory development and that theory guides future inquiry and innovation.
LIBTHEORY fosters research capacity and professional development by:
- Supporting the use of rigorous research methods
- Encouraging member engagement with research
- Facilitating international networks of shared research interests
- Promoting communication of research
- Supporting collaborative initiatives
- Sponsoring the Library History Special Interest Group to ensure connections with the historical foundations of LIS.
As part of IFLA’s Professional Division C, LIBTHEORY contributes to the ongoing development of LIS, helping libraries improve existing practices and adopt innovative approaches to meet the evolving needs of users worldwide while strengthening connections between the historical, theoretical, and applied aspects of our field.
