IFLA meets Charleston: the meaning of diversity in a diverse world
This panel session is organised by the IFLA Acquisition and Collection Development (ACD) section. It diverts from the United States of America (U.S.) where DEI has become commonplace, to libraries abroad where differing local histories and current contexts shape the focus of DEI policies and library acquisition parameters. Focusing on Australia, Canada, Sweden and Switzerland, librarians representing academic libraries in these countries explain what is available or hidden in their collections. Discussions will center indigenous, gendered and migrant communities. Perspectives on DEI in Europe range from countries with minimal colonial history to those no longer building collections. While some libraries consider some cultural items ready for repatriation, others have developed approaches for handling culturally sensitive materials onsite.

About the IFLA Acquisition and Collection Development (ACD) section
IFLA and the ACD section identified Open Access (OA) and Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) as two main focus areas for the 2023-2025 Action Plan. The DEI initiative aimes to advocate the diversity, equity and inclusion in practices in the area of acquisition and collection development. Both ACD OA and DEI focus areas and their initiatives align with IFLA current Strategic Direction.
