The world Poetry Day 21 of March

Since 2012 I have been working with The Poetry days in Malmö, a non-profit association, to promote readings of poetry from poets all over the world on this day, in our city and in our libraries in Malmö.

This year 2025 our Poetry program started already on Monday, 17 and lasted 5 days ending with the World poetry day.

Six poets were invited from six countries: Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey and not least a fantastic Swedish trombonist!

They all appeared before the public in different places such as: Public libraries, Malmö Art gallery, a legendary book store, in the city archives and finally a fantastic stage: children’s scene in peoples park.

The power of poetry is to hear it read aloud, in the original language as well as the translation. It’s like music. It touches your soul. But you have to have an open mind, just like a child, for the magic to happen.

UNESCO first adopted 21 March as World Poetry Day in 1999, with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.

World Poetry Day is an occasion to honor poets, translators of poetry, revive oral traditions of poetry recitals, promote the reading, writing and teaching of poetry. Poetry can bring people together across continents, all are invited to join in!
