IFLA Academic and Research Libraries: Hot Topics 2025
The Hot Topics Session is the signature event for IFLA’s Academic and Research Libraries (ARL) Standing Committee. This year the IFLA-ARL seeks brief proposals on the topic of “Libraries as Springboard in National Development: Opportunities and Challenges.”
Hot Topics Abstract
Development is essential to the growth and sustenance of a nation. As such, governments usually have a plan to spearhead national development whether in developed or developing countries. National development is aimed at improving the lives of citizens and equitable access to information is a critical component to achieving that goal. Libraries as social institutions and community facilitators are well positioned to foster national development, particularly in the educational, cultural, economic and political development of societies. The Hot Topics session will focus on a broad range of topics to highlight libraries’ roles as proactive agents in facilitating the development of a nation including but not limited to:
- facilitating access to current information
- supporting education and digital literacies
- enabling groundbreaking research
- serving as central hub of engagement and discourse
- highlighting challenges libraries face in maximizing their impact
