IFLA Newsletter, Vol. 4, No. 10

Welcome to the October 2024 newsletter!

We have a very full newsletter this month, as the theme is close to our hearts – Sustainable urbanisation. What do libraries mean for the future of cities (and all sorts of human settlements)?

Looking back at the Unite Nations’ Pact for the Future—adopted at last month’s Summit of the Future—knowledge, science, technology and innovation, culture, and ‘meaningful’ connectivity are recognised as drivers of development. At a local level, in our cities, communities, and villages, libraries are the hub for connecting people to all the above. Libraries mean the futures we want!

In a few weeks, the 12th Session of the World Urban Forum will take place in Cairo, Egypt. It will focus on localising the SDGs, looking at actions and strategies that involve all people in addressing the challenges that they face in their daily lives. IFLA believes that libraries are key partners for localising the SDGs, and for co-creating solutions with and for the local community.

Keeping with the theme of creating the future we want within our cities and communities, here’s what’s in store in this month’s newsletter:

Discover outcomes from the IFLA Information Futures Summit, including the launch of the Brisbane Declaration! Face what the future holds for libraries and communities with the IFLA Trend Report 2024, and find out how IFLA’s emerging leaders are starting work on the Trend Report learning tools. Explore how we think about Internet connectivity, and discover some good practices of libraries upholding democracy, literacy, and sustainability in their communities, coming from the recent International Library Conference in Barcelona.

Also, have a look at IFLA’s 2023 Annual Report, and our brand new 2024-2029 Strategy!

There’s much more to explore, happy reading!
