Metlib 2025: Libraries Building Social Well-being Worldwide
03 November 2025
The Metlib 2025 Conference, hosted jointly by Toronto Public Library and The New York Public Library, convened urban library leaders, practitioners, and strategists from around the world in Toronto from October 4th to 9th, 2025, under the theme “From Isolation to Social Connection: Libraries and Well-being”. This annual gathering provided a vibrant forum to explore how metropolitan libraries serve as catalysts for civic engagement, combat social isolation, and foster community well-being.

Over several days, attendees experienced engaging discussions, workshops, and presentations, spotlighting innovative strategies and successful programs in metropolitan libraries globally. Speakers from organizations such as the GenWell Project, Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing, DemocracyXChange, and many leading libraries in North America showcased practical approaches to strengthening social bonds and addressing loneliness through library services and programs. Cultural activities and tours enabled delegates to explore Toronto, one of the world’s most diverse and vibrant urban centres, and to witness firsthand some of its award-winning branch libraries.
Metlib’s unique format brought together those involved in front-line service, program design, space planning, and long-term strategy, allowing professionals to learn from one another and create lasting global connections. This year’s conference included the MetLib Learning Circle cohort, a year-long initiative for senior library leaders, emphasizing collaborative learning and strategies to tackle social isolation in urban contexts. The call for proposals and registration was met with enthusiastic participation, reflecting a strong commitment within the sector to continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

Tommi Laitio, Chair of the Metropolitan Libraries Section, captured the spirit of Metlib in his own words: “The amazing thing in the world of libraries is that there is no to very little competition. People believe in helping others learn.” This sentiment resonated throughout the conference, where openness, generosity, and collective growth defined every session and exchange.
All members and interested professionals are encouraged to join the Metlib LinkedIn group, where ongoing conversations, resources, and collaborative opportunities continue beyond the conference: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/15487027/
