The IFLA Governing Board and Irish National Committee have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 World Library and Information Congress. The decision has been published in full on IFLA’s website and via IFLA-L and we are in the process of contacting all stakeholders and registered delegates.
The 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action set out an ambitious UN agenda to advance women’s empowerment and gender equality. 2020 marks their 25th anniversary, and a large-scale review has been launched to assess the progress made towards implementing the Declaration and the Platform. This review process offers libraries an opportunity to reflect on how their work can help advance gender equality and take further action. This briefing examines the role that access to information, knowledge and lifelong learning play in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action; as well as library activities and initiatives noted in national reports prepared as part of the Beijing+25 review.
In October 2019, the IFLA Preservation and Conservation (PAC) Center in Russia hosted a visitor from the IFLA PAC Centre in Qatar to facilitate exchange of expertise and cooperation between specialists from the two centres.

Theme: Smarter Bibliographies: Connecting and engaging national bibliographies with new platforms
IFLA has joined with over 40 civil society organisations across Europe in calling for the sharing of draft guidelines on the implementation of the controversial upload filter provisions in the Copyright Directive.
Efforts to use trade measures to delay or block long-overdue copyright reforms which will benefit libraries and their users are regrettable. In its comment to a review of South Africa’s enjoyment of preferential trade rules with the United States, IFLA has therefore called for the rejection of a petition seeking to punish the country for taking steps to improve how copyright functions.

Today is the start of the biannual 1Lib1Ref event! From 15th January to 5th February 2020, librarians around the world will contribute to the 5th campaign taking place on Wikipedia. The objectives of this effort are to improve the quality and reliability of articles on the website with librarians and by inviting the public to contribute to Wikipedia by exploiting the sources available in libraries.

The National Library & Documentation Services Board of Sri Lanka conducted the National Library Research Symposium on Library and Information Science (NatlibSYMPO 2019), in collaboration with the Asia & Oceania section of IFLA, on 31 October 2019 at the National Library premises, Colombo.
The sixth edition of the International Conference on Digital Landscape – ICDL 2019, themed ‘Digital Transformation for an Agile Environment’ was held at The India Habitat Centre IHC, New Delhi in November 6–8, 2019.
