Ahead of further debate around the South African Copyright Amendment Bill, IFLA would like to share views on a number of issues raised by some stakeholders around the proposed legislation. Although the Bill is well underway, and there is positive progress on several library-related topics, there is concern that issues raised by a few stakeholders might slow down or undermine progress.
ENSULIB is pleased to share that papers presented from 2016 to 2018 and Green Library Award reflections are cumulated as an article: “Exemplars, Educators, Enablers: Libraries and Sustainability: How libraries contribute to sustainability” by Stephen Wyber, Manager, Policy and Advocacy, IFLA.
Copyright is a core element of libraries’ work, and this is why IFLA is an active advocate for better copyright laws. Our engagement at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) is a key part of this. WIPO’s copyright committee (SCCR) meets twice a year and has capacity to legislate on several matters. The topic of exceptions and limitations to copyright for libraries, archives and museums are on the table for discussion. The next meeting is getting closer: 26-30 November.

The need to preserve the benefits of an open internet while finding means to address concerns about the way it works was high on the agenda at the 13th Internet Governance Forum, held in Paris from 12-14 November. IFLA was active, underlining how libraries do not only bring connectivity and training, but also essential values and skills to the discussion.
IFLA Journal and IFLA’s Knowledge Management Section are pleased to announce a call for papers for a special issue focused on Knowledge Management (KM). Peer review submission deadline: 19 April 2019
With half the world's population still offline, the need for meaningful solutions to ensure that everyone has the possibility to connect is as high as ever. While traditional commercial provision will have a role, alternatives must also be mobilised, not least libraries. This was the message of an event co-organised by IFLA in the margins of the Internet Governance Forum in Paris on 13 November.
The IFLA Document Delivery and Resource Sharing (DDRS) Standing Committee invites papers for the 16th ILDS (Interlending and Document Supply) Conference, hosted by the National Library of Technology (NTK) in Prague, Czech Republic. The Conference will be held on 9-11 October 2019
Around the world collections were suffering a variety of fates: illegal trading, destruction, natural disasters and loss of interest, leaving many at risk of being lost. In 2015 the Recommendation concerning the preservation of, and access to, documentary heritage including in digital form was adopted by UNESCO, giving new momentum to the Memory of the World Programme.
Launched this past August during IFLA WLIC 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, our first call for contributions to the Ideas Store has yielded a great and diverse set of ideas for actions that will help define the future direction of IFLA. Thus far, over 8500 ideas have been submitted from 160 countries around the world. Thank you and keep sharing your ideas!
Next year, 2019, will mark as the 10th anniversary of the Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights. To celebrate, the current Special Rapporteur – Karima Bennoune – has decided to devote her next thematic report to taking stock of the impact of the work of the cultural rights remit, inviting relevant actors to send contributions to inform her study.
Mozfest is the annual gathering of supporters of a healthy Internet: accessible to all, decentralized, creative and safe. This year there were many interesting talks and events for IFLA to be part of such as those on privacy, digital rights, privacy in oppressive regimes and inclusion and literacy.
