There is less than a month to go before a planned vote in the European Parliament on ratifying the Marrakesh Treaty. If this is done correctly, people with print disabilities could enjoy much wider access to knowledge and culture. IFLA continues to maintain the pressure for laws that let libraries maximise the impact of their work here.
Libraries have always been about giving people access to the knowledge they need to take on the world. The Internet can boost this, but only if people have the skills and confidence to be, and feel, safe online. To mark Safer Internet Day 2017, here are some examples of how libraries are helping.
The Government Libraries, Library and Research Services for Parliaments and Law Libraries Sections invite proposals for presentations, to be presented as one of the sessions in the next IFLA General Conference to be held on August 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland. We welcome proposals from individuals and organizations who can share views and implementations on Government/Parliamentary libraries helping to deliver the access to information elements of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The deadline for submissions is 3 March 2017.
Linking Advocacy to UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The Government Libraries Section is hosting a satellite meeting to be held in Berlin, Germany just after the IFLA annual conference - WLIC 2017. We will revise the Guidelines for Libraries of Government Departments, in particular chapter 11, related to advocacy, tying it with the aspects of public access to information of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The Association of Parliamentary Libraries in Canada (APLIC) is pleased to announce its new website. Completely redesigned, visitors can learn more about the Association and its members. The Member Vignettes highlight interesting facts and historical notes about each jurisdiction. The Government and Legislative Libraries Online Publications Portal (GALLOP Portal) provides access to over 475,000 fulltext documents from contributing jurisdictions as well as the federal Depository Services Program.
Libraries are at the heart of healthy societies. By bringing people together – students, researchers, creators, citizens – they support learning, sharing, and the creation of new ideas.
Discussions about fake news has led to a new focus on media literacy more broadly, and the role of libraries and other education institutions in providing this.
IFLA Government Libraries Section (GLS) intends to continue communicating its activities and achievements to the international library community from all corners of the globe. For this reason, GLS considers it relevant to propose a communication strategy for 2017-2019, focusing on social media. The activities of the Plan should help to consolidate a vibrant international community of librarians and information professionals interested in government libraries.
