December 6 was the official first day of the Internet Governance Forum in Guadalajara. We participated in the session on Assessing the Role of Internet Governance in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the lightning talk on Finding the Balance: Access to Knowledge and Culture Online which was organised by IFLA.
The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Guadalajara takes place on 6-9 December 2016. IFLA will be focusing on promoting the Principles on Public Access in Libraries, which includes infrastructure, policy, copyright, accessibility, privacy, skills development, open access and local content.
The event will be held from April 30, 5 pm, to May 5, noon, in Montréal, at the Grande Bibliothèque (475 De Maisonneuve Blvd East, Montréal, Québec, Canada).
Collecting, Preserving, and Transforming the News – for Research and the Public
Libraries are increasingly places not just for reading, but also for creating and sharing. They are guardians of free access to information and free expression – two values which are inseparable from each other. Yet in the Internet Age, new possibilities may be compromised by a sense of insecurity and loss of privacy online. Libraries aim to find a way to overcome this apparent trade-off. The new FAIFE Network offers a forum for discussion on how to do this.

IFLA joined a coalition of international and national NGOs at the 33rd meeting of the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) on 14-18 November 2016. While IFLA works to achieve individual reforms at the national and regional level, WIPO is still the most effective place for achieving change which will allow libraries around the world to do their jobs in a digital age.
The number of people connecting to and using the Internet is expanding rapidly, but so too are concerns about freedom online. The role of libraries in giving access to information, and the skills needed to know how to use it, is centuries old, but has a particular relevance today. The Freedom Online Conference, held on 17-19 October 2016 in San Jose, Costa Rica, provided an opportunity to underline the contribution libraries make to a free, trusted, and sustainable Internet.

Libraries in too many countries around the world lack the basic laws needed to do the best by their communities. And even where laws exist, they frequently fail to take account of the realities of the digital age. As such, the gap between what our communities expect and what libraries are able to offer is growing. The World Intellectual Property Organisation and its members can help overcome this.
Libraries play a crucial role in bringing people to reading. From children’s books to the latest thrillers, they are the safety value in the copyright system that prevents access to culture being the preserve of the better off. But eLending has been surrounded by legal uncertainty for many years. Today, European judges decided that eBooks could indeed be treated as books, but further analysis of the decision will be necessary to understand its implications and limits.
