With key copyright decision-makers meeting this week in Geneva at WIPO, we are happy to follow up on our report with an overview of country-by-country implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty with an analysis of the data as a whole. Congratulations to the editors and authors of the IFLA Professional Report No. 137, titled "The Government Information Landscape and Libraries" on receiving the 2023 Margaret T. Lane/Virginia F. Saunders Memorial Research Award from the American Library Association, Government Documents Roundtable (ALA GODORT).
A strong team of IFLA representatives attended the 9th African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, held in Niamey, Niger. Through their presence, they were able to build links and advocate effectively for libraries both with regional and national leaders.
Following our participation in the UNESCO Internet4Trust conference, IFLA has now submitted comments on UNESCO's draft Guidelines on Platform Regulation. In addition to welcoming the balance found in the document, we also propose improvements, including readier recognition of libraries' role in a healthy internet.
From 13-17 March, the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s lead body focused on copyright – the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights – will meet in Geneva. Key discussions include the presentation of a toolkit on preservation, and discussions on facilitating cross-border working. IFLA will be there to represent the needs and interests of libraries.
Information is a key condition for development, in particular the face of crises. As an IFLA side-event at the African Regional Forum for Sustainable Development underlined, this makes libraries – if properly supported – into key players in providing a response to the challenges Africa faces today.
