The IFLA Academic and Research Libraries (ARL) Section focuses on cooperation, exchange of information, and promotion and support of the role of libraries as core institutions for research and education worldwide.
As part of the IFLA Asia-Oceania Regional Division Committee's Action plan on UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Committee's South Asia Working Group organised a Webinar on the South Asian Libraries and UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
In 2022, the IFLA Acquisition and Collection Development (ACD) Section continued its work to support acquisitions and collection development processes for libraries across the globe, this year with a focus on incorporating open access content into library collections.
IFLA was active at the 2022 Internet Governance Forum, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, speaking both in UNESCO sessions on Internet Universality Indicators, and the Dynamic Coalition on Public Access in Libraries session on inclusive internet governance.
IFLA was present at the World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education, held on 14-16 November 2022 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. With around 1500 delegates, it provided an opportunity for ministers, officials and experts to share updates and ideas. Thanks to engagement by IFLA's representative, Marianne Martens, Chair of the Section on Library Services to Children and Young Adults, libraries were recognised in the resulting Tashkent Declaration for their role in supporting early years care.
From 6-20 November 2022, 35,000 delegates from 190 countries, including more than 90 heads of state, came together in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, for the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference – COP27.
The webinar series "Sustainable Development Goals and Library Associations" follows the IFLA Strategic Direction 1.1 Show the power of libraries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. A working group from MLAS in collaboration with IFLA New Professionals SIG and IFLA Regional Divisions will coordinate webinars about various top topics resulting from a survey MLAS carried out during 2020-2021. On the occasion of the Regional Workshop that IFLA organised in Bangkok, IFLA's Asia-Oceania Regional Division Committee had the opportunity to hold their first in person business meeting as a Committee in their own region. It was held in Bangkok, 16-17 November 2022. Read more here.
At the weekend, the world marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities - the 30th anniversary of the celebration. With a future-orientated theme - the role of innovation - it is nonetheless also an opportunity to remember the need to get the basics right, not least the right of access to information.
