Why the right of access to information matters for development

IFLA has made a submission to a call by the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression for evidence around the link between this freedom and sustainable development. This highlights the importance of freedom of access to information, and the role of libraries in making this meaningful and universal. 

IFLA Regional Division for Latin America and the Caribbean (IFLA LAC) to hold its Mid-Term Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico 

The Mid-Term Meeting of IFLA LAC Regional Division will be held on February 27-28 in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition, an International Advocacy Seminar on "Transformation and Empowerment of Libraries in Latin America and the Caribbean” will be held on March 1 at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. 

Earthquake in Türkiye and Syria

On behalf of IFLA, I want to send strength and courage to our colleagues in Türkiye and Syria, in the wake of the terrible destruction and the sufferings of the people created by the recent earthquakes. I feel for the people in these countries who have lost not only their homes and belongings but also many people who were close to them.

Acronym Changed: SCORE is the refreshed acronym for Serials and Continuing Resources Section

In response to the IFLA Communication team, members of Serials and Continuing Resources Section had a survey on the suggested acronyms and the majority of committee members voted for the SCORE as the refreshed acronym of the section.

Call for Articles: UNESCO Memory of the World SCEaR Newsletter Special Issue on Press Freedom and Documentary Heritage

UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day (3 May) acts as a reminder of the importance of respecting commitments to freedom of the press. It calls for reflection on how these freedoms were achieved, evaluation of the current state of press freedom around the world, and remembrance of those journalists who have lost their lives in pursuit of providing access to information.

Resource Sharing: A Key Pillar of Open - Final Conference of the HERMES Project

Save the date for the final conference of the HERMES project on resource sharing, bringing together librarians, researchers, students and advocates for a knowledge commons in order to share tools, learn lessons, and identify future needs in the field of resource sharing. The conference takes place on 18 April 2023 at the National Library of the Netherlands in The Hague, with training on 19 April.

The Culture 2030 Goal campaign, of which IFLA is a member, has urged UNESCO Member States to make good on their commitment to promote an explicit culture goal in future development frameworks, as made in the declaration from MONDIACULT 2022. The campaign's zero-draft for a culture goal provides an excellent starting point.
