The September 2022 edition of the IFLA Asia and Oceania Regional Newsletter includes editorials from the Chair of the Asia-Oceania Regional Division Committee, the Manager of the Regional Office for Asia and Oceania, and news both from IFLA and the region and beyond. This covers work in Malaysia, Maldives, Indonesia, Tonga, New Zealand, and China.
IFLA attended a meeting of the UNESCO World Book Capital Network in Wroclaw, Poland, on 22-23 September, bringing the perspective of the global library field as the participating cities formally signed the Network charter, and made plans for future actions.
As part of a global group of organisations committed to promoting access to knowledge at the World Intellectual Property Organization and beyond, IFLA encourages the library field to engage with a new website which shares key resources and data for advocacy and awareness-raising.
In 2022, Global MIL Week, hosted by Nigeria, will focus is on MIL’s role in nurturing trust, advancing social protection, and encouraging collective solidarity, to be explored through the theme, “Nurturing trust: A Media and Information Literacy Imperative”.
Library and Archives of People’s Majlis hope to see more libraries and institutions take the initiative to restore and preserve their collections as the handwritten records in any institution are vital cultural heritage – not only to the institution which holds the collection, but to the country too.

Since the last issue of this newsletter, we have had the opportunity to meet face-to-face again for the first time since 2019.
The National Library of Indonesia has deposited the bulk of its collection relating to Indonesian and Southeast Asian history and culture. The collections contain information of Indonesian hajj pilgrims in colonial and postcolonial period.

IFLA’s core message at MONDIACULT 2022 was a call to policymakers, including ministers of culture from around the world, to look to library associations and institutions as partners in realising the potential of culture to leave no one behind. We stressed that, through its transversal impact across the development agenda, culture is critical for achieving sustainable development goals.
