Recalling IFLA’s Declaration on Cultural Property Protection during Armed Conflict
22 October 2024
In light of escalating conflicts, IFLA stresses the priority of protecting all people, in accordance with international human rights law. Within the remit of our Federation, we also recall our Declaration on the protection of archives, libraries, museums and heritage places during armed conflicts and political instability.
This joint declaration, made together with the International Council on Archives, International Council of Museums, International Council on Monuments and Sites, stresses the importance of protecting cultural and documentary heritage as an essential component of protecting human and cultural rights.
The Declaration further expresses our shared conviction that cultural and documentary heritage professionals play an essential role in building a peaceful, sustainable, and collective future.
We therefore urge all parties involved in conflict to respect and protect all libraries, archives and museums and heritage places – as well as the livelihoods, safety, and security of those working, volunteering, and interacting within these spaces.
