The IFLA Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning (CPDWL) Section, in partnership with the IFLA Regional Division Committees, presented the fifth session in the CPDWL webinar series. About the Webinar
This session, titled “Empowering Libraries in the AI Era: Ethical Engagement, Strategic Adoption, and Professional Development,” is intended to help library professionals navigate the rapidly changing technological landscape. Additionally, the session emphasized regional and cultural variations in AI adoption, offering a comprehensive global perspective on its impact across diverse library environments. Attendees also gained a deeper understanding of the European AI Act and how it shapes ethical considerations for AI in libraries.

Speakers:

Jean-Philippe Moreux is in charge of AI at BnF. He works on BnF’s AI programmes and projects. He participates in national and international research projects on these subjects. Previously, he was Gallica’s scientific advisor and BnF’s OCR expert. He began his career as a computer R&D engineer and project manager, and has worked as a scientific editor and consultant in the publishing industry. He is chair of the CENL ‘AI in Libraries’ network group and a member of the AI4LAM and IIIF committees.

Iman Khamis is a Library & Information Science leader, AI & Data Science expert, and advocate for smart libraries. With over 19 years of experience in academic and public libraries, she specializes in digital transformation, AI applications in libraries, and collection development. Iman holds a CILIP-accredited master’s in Library & Information Science, an MS in Data Science & AI, and is currently pursuing an Ed.D. at Johns Hopkins University.
She has played a key role in shaping library operations at institutions such as Northwestern University in Qatar and Bibliotheca Alexandrina. A frequent keynote speaker and researcher, Iman actively contributes to international conferences and publications on AI-driven library advancements.
Her notable publications include a chapter in the Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence for Libraries (De Gruyter Saur, 2025), an editing of the Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Libraries (IGI-Global, 2024), and contributions on AI-powered chatbots and book recommender systems in library science research. Through her work, Iman aims to bridge the gap between traditional library sciences and emerging technologies, ensuring libraries remain at the forefront of innovation.
