This webpage includes a number of questions that may arise from the nomination process. Please check this page and the page related to a specific committee and position.

Answers to many of your questions are likely to be found in the IFLA Elections 2025 Guide.

My employer/association is not an IFLA Member, may I be nominated?
Yes, anyone may be nominated to an IFLA position or committee. You will need to seek an IFLA Member or Affiliate to validate your nomination by submitting a nomination form. If you need to find an IFLA Member or Affiliate to validate your nomination to a Section Standing Committee, please contact the Chair of the committee by filtering the Committee Finder. For other positions, you can consult the list of current IFLA Members.

I am a member of an IFLA committee, but not a (fee-paying) member as an association, institution or individual affiliate. May I nominate myself or a colleague?
No, only IFLA Members and Affiliates are eligible to nominate.

I am an IFLA Member/Affiliate registered to a Professional Section Standing Committee but would like to be nominated to another committee. What should I do?
You need to seek an IFLA Member or Affiliate registered for the Section of your interest. If you need support in finding a nominator, please contact the Chair of the Section by filtering the Committee Finder.

I am an IFLA Member or Affiliate registered for a Professional Section Standing Committee and want to become a member of that committee. I submitted my nominee form, is this sufficient?
No, you will also need to use the secure link sent by Mi-voice and complete a nomination for yourself.

How many nominations do I need for the role in which I am interested?
Check the relevant section of our elections guide, but for Sections and Regional Division Committees, only one nomination is needed.

I am an Officer of a Professional Section Standing Committee and would like to be nominated for a position as Chair of a Professional Division Committee
You will need to obtain three nominations from members of the Professional Section Standing Committees, but please note one of these may be your own self-nomination.

I’m confused between nominators, nominations and nominees.
A nominator is an association, institution, individual affiliate or Honorary Fellow of IFLA with the right to nominate (propose) candidates for IFLA committees. They have to fill in a nominator form and guarantee their nominee to fill in the nominee form.

A nominee is the candidate who is nominated for a position. They have to fill in a nominee form.

A nomination is therefore when a nominator proposes a candidate. This is only considered valid when there is a match between a nomination (or nominations) submitted by a nominator (IFLA Association or Institution, Honorary Fellow or an Affiliate) and a nominee form submitted by an individual wishing to stand for an IFLA position or committee.

The exception is for self-nominations, where candidates can propose themselves. This only applies for Special Interest Group members .

I am an IFLA Association or Institution Member or Affiliate and did not receive correspondence from Mi-Voice at the Call for Nominations on 13 January 2025.
Please contact Mi-Voice at [email protected]

I submitted a candidacy as part of the pre-nominations phase, do I need to do anything?
Yes, you still need to find someone to nominate you. Your name will already appear on the elections platform and so you are easily discoverable there, but it may be a good idea to reach out to the chair of the committee anyway to ask for suggestions of who might be ready to nominate.

I submitted my nominee form, but my name hasn’t appeared on the page of candidates for nominators – what is going on?
Once a nominee form is submitted, we carry out checks to ensure that you are eligible (for example, that you have not already served the maximum number of terms, or are not a nominee for too many committees). This process can take up to three days. If your nominee form is valid, your name will then appear as a choice for nominators.

How many nominations may I submit per committee?
You may nominate as many individuals as there are vacancies on a committee. This information is shared on the Platform. Please be aware that for Regional Division Committees, there may be caps on how many people you can nominate from a single country. Only nominations made up to this limit will be considered.

For which positions may I nominate?
Please refer to Page 6 of the IFLA Elections 2025 Guide.

How many committees can I nominate for?
You may nominate for all the committees you are eligible for in your membership category, please refer to page 7 of the IFLA Elections 2025 Guide.

For which Regional Division Committees may I nominate?
You may only nominate for the Region Division Committee of the region of your residency, according to what you have indicated to us when joining.

For which Section Standing Committee may I nominate?
As an IFLA Member or Affiliate, you may only nominate for the Sections for which you are registered.

I would like to nominate someone for a Special Interest Group  – how do I do this?
Special Interest Groups work with self-nominations, and so you should simply encourage the candidate you are thinking of to submit a self-nomination.

I am not registered for the Section I would like to nominate for, what should I do?
Changes to Sections for nominations closed on 20 December 2024 and you can only nominate for those Sections you are registered for. Encourage your candidate to contact the chair of the relevant Section (see previous questions for more)

I have not yet paid my membership fees for 2024, may I nominate?
Only members in good financial standing as of 20 December 2024 may submit nominations.

I would like to pay my membership fees for 2025. Can I then nominate someone?
Only members in good financial standing as of 20 December 2024 may submit nominations. Regrettably, you have missed this nomination period.

What are the expected costs if I join a committee or get nominated to a position?
Volunteering on an IFLA committee or position will require you to allocate your time. However, there are no costs associated with serving on IFLA’s committees or holding a position. Committees hold regular online meetings via Zoom or similar platform. Attendance at the IFLA Congress is no longer a compulsory requirement although it is highly recommended as an outstanding experience. If you plan to attend the congress, you may want to coordinate with your employer or budget accordingly.

Does my nominator have to come from my country?
No, your nominator may be resident in any country. However, for the Regional Division Committees, your nominator needs to be in the same region as you.

If my institution or association nominates me, do I represent them on the committee?
IFLA Volunteers serve on a personal basis and do not represent their employer. Even after retiring or moving jobs, you may continue to volunteer for IFLA.

If you still have questions, feel free to contact [email protected]. We’re here to help you through the process as your contributions are essential to the success of our activities.
