IFLA's participation at the Heritage Middle East Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi was the opportunity to share an overview of how libraries are contributing to environmental sustainability goals today, and inspire others to follow good practice across the MENA region.
Marie-France Plassard, a respected officer and director of the IFLA Core Programme for Universal Bibliographic Control and International MARC (UBCIM), played a pivotal role in the development and promotion of international library standards. In 1991, she was responsible for establishing the Permanent UNIMARC Committee (PUC) under the UBCIM Programme.
Today, IFLA opens the nominations process for over 800 positions on its many committees. There are six weeks for candidates to come forward, and for Members and Affiliates to submit nominations for the varied positions available.
The Bibliography Section wishes IFLA fellows and the entire library community a wonderful and successful new year! On this occasion, we are delighted to share with you the highlights of a productive 2024.
IFLA is happy to join a consortium of eight partners working on the IP4OS project. This aims to find practical ways of ensuring that management of IP supports open science, bringing together different communities supporting researchers.

Association members, as well as those from Latin America and the Caribbean and the Middle East and North Africa, were the most likely to use their right to nominate candidates for roles within IFLA in 2023. Welcome to the December 2024 edition of the IFLA Newsletter. In our last edition of the year, we look at the topic of evaluation and impact.
We are thrilled to announce that the Knowledge Rights 21 Programme has been extended for a further five years thanks to the generous support of Arcadia. This continued funding, amounting to €5.5 million, will allow us to further invest in building capacity for reforms that enhance 21st-century access to research, education and culture.
More than a thousand library workers in all regions of the world benefited from IFLA’s training programme on “Measurement, evaluation, and demonstrating impact of library services” in 2024. Read more about how the year went.
A new set of training materials offers insights for libraries and library associations into the basics of grant-based partnerships. Through a handbook, three how-to guides and a recorded webinar, learn about what you need in order to build, manage and sustain partnerships. This work is funded by SIGL.
IFLA continued its partnership and collaboration with UNESCO-IFAP by hosting a session led by the IGF Dynamic Coalitions from each organization: the Dynamic Coalition of Public Access in Libraries (DC-PAL) and the Dynamic Coalition on Measuring Digital Inclusion (DC-DI). The session was also co-hosted by members of the Global Digital Inclusion Partnership (GDIP).
Jonathan Hernandez-Perez, Chair of the IFLA Advisory Committee on Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression, spoke for IFLA at the event in Guadalajara, Mexico, sharing library experiences and reflecting on the interconnection between freedom of expression, and the freedoms to publish and read.
