Stronger, More Stable, More Inclusive: Libraries Around the World Help Build Peaceful Societies

    While libraries may have a reputation as a place to come for peace and quiet, they can also be drivers of peace in the wider communities they serve. Around the world, they provide a welcoming space where all members of the community can come together, and offer services that build more equal, more participatory, and so stronger and more peaceful societies. On World Peace Day 2017, IFLA looks to highlight examples of how libraries contribute.

Speaking at the European Conference on Information Literacy, IFLA underlined the importance of what libraries are doing, and the need to ensure key decision-makers understand this.

      Applications Open for World Book Capital 2020: IFLA Encourages Bids that Highlight Libraries

        The World Book Capital initiative gives cities the opportunity both to celebrate local writing and culture, but also to promote reading and a love of books among residents and visitors. Bids are now open for 2020. IFLA welcomes candidates which recognise and promote the role of libraries in delivering more sustainable, literate and participatory societies.

        IFLA responds to the OECD open government consultation

          Open Government includes practices that redraw the relationship between public officials and citizens so that both can benefit. IFLA, in its response to an OECD consultation, took the opportunity to reiterate the important role libraries play in the field. Libraries also have worked increasingly to create digital collections in order to maximize access, and make collections available to the public.
